Basic Job Interview Tips

Before and after college I was privileged enough to attend job interview seminars and workshops. Of the several I have attended, each one gave different tips from totally different employer angles. It was a little perplexing at first. How should I know which one I should take when one principle totally contradicts another. But I came to realize soon enough that all those tips given would be of value.

Every employer and interviewer has his own unique personality that is based mostly based on background and environment. However, there are basic types questions that are always present in any kind of interview. These are (1) open-ended questions, (2) closed-ended questions, (3) hypothetical questions, (4) leading questions, (5) multi-barreled questions, and (6) behavioral questions. Being prepared and doing your homework before an interview is the best way to deal with the first three types. For leading questions, having a positive direction in your answers is the key. Mutli-barreled questions can be a little confusing, and since interviewers are checking your reasoning skills, it is best to make sure that the questions are well understood before giving and answer. When in doubt, having the question repeated is not such a bad idea. Lastly, the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) approach is best for answering behavioral questions.
